Freestanding self-storage units are a growing industry. Almost every individual or office has a need for extra storage space. There are two principle styles of storage units.

The first type range in size from an oversized closet to the size of a multi-car garage.

The second variety of storage units are inside a building with several units on each floor (these units are often climate controlled).

If you’re looking for a storage unit for your own use, you should have location, size, lease term, and price as primary points of comparison. There are, however, points that you should consider that will set a particular unit apart from other options.

  1. Is the unit clean, with no evidence of roof leaks, leaves or dirt blowing in under the door?
  2. Does the unit door open and close easily? Is the door wide enough for oversized items?
  3. Are locks provided or do you provide your own?  Are the locking and closing mechanisms in alignment and easy to operate?
  4. If the units are together in a compound, is the property fenced? If the units are in a building, is there controlled access after hours?  Is climate controle a priority for you?
  5. Is there adequate space in the aisles or driveways in a section, so that two or more units can be accessed at the same time?
  6. Is there staff on hand during the day, and can monthly charges be made to a credit card during the terms of the lease?
  7. What are the times that the office is open and what times can you access your storage unit?
  8. Is there lighting outside and around the units? Does the light inside the unit work?
  9. Is there enough room to stack items inside the storage unit rather than piling items up?
  10. Is access to the compound or building through a locked gate? Is there a camera monitoring the gate when the staff is not available?

In addition to these points, you should be sure to clearly label or color code the contents of your storage unit. Heavy and bulky items should be stored towards the back of the unit. Items that you may need on a fairly regular basis should be accessible and closer to the front. Storage bins should be covered, and any cardboard should be stored away from the walls and off the floor. Contents of a storage unit should have extra insurance coverage.

Stick to these 10 tips to make sure that you are getting the most out of your storage unit!
